I was so busy at Thembalethu, that I hardly had time to paint. When I got back I seemed to have lost what little ability I may once have had. I needed to do something deliberate and structured to get back into it.

I'm not sure what I will be calling this one when it's done. It's the same size as the grizzlies, 24x36. My process is to do an underpainting in acrylic which dries quickly and lays a foundation for the oil I paint over top. I like the feel of this painting. Let's see whether it ends up on someone's wall or leaning against mine while waiting in line to get finished. I attended Liz Wiltzen's plein air workshop a few weeks ago. Some of the painting was done just a few minutes walk from her studio on Canmore. Not everyone can walk out the door and have a full view of the Three Sisters. It's haying time. All the farmers around us are out in their fields from the moment the sun is sufficiently warm  to dry the grass enough to cut and bale. I set out on my bike, backpack, and pochade late Thursday afternoon. I love the smell of freshly cut grass and the birds love what scurries for cover after theirs has been suddenly removed by the passing contraption! A friend gave me this old paint box that his dad picked up at a garage sale. Another friend who works at a metal shop made the aluminum plates and turned me a big nut with which I attach the box to the tripod which I bought used for $10 on kijiji.
